MSD developing national care standards

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is developing draft national care standards to outline quality of care for children and young people.

In a recent press release, MSD said the draft national care standards are being developed after consultation with young people, caregivers, social workers, providers and whānau.

Jo Harrison, who is leading the work, said:

"The standards sit within a context - including things like how we do our procurement, the assessments and approval process, and making sure caregivers have the training and support they need to understand, manage and think beyond the behaviours.

While they’re not yet finalised, they provide a flavour of what we're looking to achieve. They can start to influence the system-wide change needed and give us a platform for continuous improvement."

The Government has previously announced the intention to develop national care standards as part of the reforms for care and protection services.

Logo for new Ministry

The logo and branding for the new Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Vulnerable Children has been unveiled. The logo draws on imagery of a pou (a pillar / support) and realising potential. A panel of young people formerly in state care were involved in developing the design.
