In this guest lecture, Dr Jingjing Sun (University of Montana) will talk about the Pathways to Wellness programme and building strong and reciprocal research-practice partnerships.

This Guest Speaker Talk has been organised by the Faculty of Education and Social Work at Waipapa Taumata Rau | the University of Auckland.

To support children’s survivance, members of an Indigenous community in the Flathead Nation in Montana and Jingjing Sun's research team co-designed and implemented a culturally responsive social-emotional learning program called Pathways to Wellness. Using community-based participatory research, this place-based program attends to the multiple ecological contexts of Indigenous children’s development and has shown positive impacts on children, educators, and families.

In this talk, Jingjing Sun will first explain how their early work with children and teachers in urban Illinois laid the groundwork for building strong and reciprocal research-practice partnerships in Montana. They will then describe the co-design process of Pathways to Wellness and its impacts on multiple levels. Finally, they will discuss how this model of developing research-practice partnerships can be extended to other Indigenous communities and schools to align communities’ strengths in forging pathways to wellness for children.
