Social media policy

This policy outlines NZFVC’s approach to social media and moderation. It applies to all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Our specific Facebook terms of use are included at the end of this document.

Social media is an important tool to advance our purpose of providing access to high quality research and information on family and whānau violence. Social media can be a powerful tool to support the prevention of violence and influence change. We also welcome feedback on our work.

With the use of social media comes a responsibility to ensure the safety of our online communities. We are committed to this and to remaining true to our purpose to disseminate high quality information. Therefore, we moderate discussion and comments. The goal of this is to encourage constructive engagement, remove offensive contributions, keep the discussion on track and direct individuals to appropriate service providers where needed.

Constructive engagement

We encourage open and respectful discussion about issues related to family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa New Zealand. We do this by sharing relevant research, resources, news and events.

Remove offensive, irrelevant or inappropriate contributions

We will not tolerate irrelevant, disrespectful, trolling, offensive or hateful comments or messages, disclosure of confidential information, or personal attacks, offensive language, abuse or threats. We retain the right to delete comments or messages that we feel are inappropriate or inconsistent with our values and purpose. Such posts can deter other users. Serious or serial offenders may be warned or banned.

Keep the discussion on track

We encourage discussion and community self-moderation. However, we will moderate to keep discussions constructive and respectful. Our online community should be a safe and positive forum. We will remove comments that are false or misleading, a deliberate attempt to derail the conversation or otherwise inappropriate or irrelevant.

Direct individuals to appropriate service providers

We are not a direct service organisation and we are not able to provide emergency assistance or advice for people affected by violence. However, moderators may need to provide users with links to appropriate services. If there is a threat or disclosure about the safety and wellbeing of a person where there is immediate danger, the moderator has a duty of care to contact 111 and urge the user to report the incident themselves.

Our staff monitor and moderate our social media content using these guidelines. We do not have the ability to monitor comments continuously or reply to all messages individually. You can help by notifying us of potential problems and encouraging each other to keep conversations appropriate. If you see something you think is inappropriate please let us know at info@nzfvc.org.nz
