A trial has begun in selected areas of the UK, allowing people to ask police whether a new or existing intimate partner has a history of domestic violence. The intiative has been called 'Clare's Law' after Clare Wood, who was killed by a man she met on Facebook. Ms Wood's family later discovered he had previous convictions for violence against women, including kidnapping an ex-partner at knifepoint.
Applications for information can also be made by friends, relatives or neighbours who have reasonable concerns about an acquaintance’s partner.
