“Thursdays in Black” is a campaign run at tertiary institutions around Aotearoa/New Zealand by women in local Student’s Associations that aims to raise awareness of rape and violence. The campaign, in which supporters wear black clothing on Thursdays and distribute material aimed at exposing and preventing violence and discrimination, was developed from “Women in Black” – an international anti-war human rights initiative.

The New Zealand University Student’s Association is seeking a new look for the Thursdays in Black campaign posters and t-shirts, and so are running a competition that calls for submissions of art or design work.

The organisers are looking for an image that is inspiring, community focused, and appropriate for the campaign message. The campaign is bilingual, so posters in Te Reo are encouraged. The organisers also encourage designs that focus on homophobia and discrimination.

The design for poster and/or t-shirts must include the words “Thursdays in Black – demanding a world without rape and violence” and “Brought to you by the Tertiary Women’s Focus Group and NZUSA”.

The top designs will be taken to the national women’s conference of NZUSA on June 28 for the Tertiary Women’s Focus Group to collectively decide which to use. The winner will get their design/image used in the campaign, and will receive a $50 Gordon Harris token (or similar). The two runners up will get $20 tokens.
