The Department of Statistics – Tatauranga Aotearoa have released their 2009 review of crime and criminal justice statistics.

The purpose of the review was to determine key priorities for the official statistics system to address in the area of crime and criminal justice.

The report finds that there is scope for improving the quality of available statistics and the collection of new statistics to fill policy and research gaps.

Five development areas have been highlighted, along with several recommendations. The five development areas are:
1. Key measures of crime and criminal justice
2. New or improved official statistics
3. Infrastructure
4. Research
5. Analysis and dissemination

Statistics NZ will manage a group overseeing the development and implementation plan. This group will involve members from the Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, Department of Corrections, and the Ministry of Social Development. This group will meet twice a year to monitor and evaluate progress and inform all lead agencies of developments.
