Ngāpuhi and CYF Tai Tokerau seek to make a difference for tamariki

A recently established Child, Youth and Family team, Tai Tokerau, is focusing on addressing health, education, social and economic concerns for children in the region. Previously part of CYF's northern region (including Auckland), Tai Tokerau has been set up to concentrate on local needs and strengthening local services. 

In 2012, Te-Rūnanga-ā-Iwi ō Ngāpuhi and CYF signed an Memorandum of Understanding to work together when Ngāpuhi children or young people are placed into care or commit a criminal offence. Nearly one quarter of Māori children placed in care are of Ngāpuhi descent. The partnership aims to place children within a network of approved whānau or hapū members who share common heritage and culture. The team also offers marae-based whānau hui to provide parenting education before a family reaches a 'crisis point'.

Marion Heeney, Regional Director for Tai Tokerau Child, Youth and Family, says "We believe it will really make a difference for vulnerable Ngāpuhi children if they are able to safely maintain iwi and marae connections, and receive support from their wider whānau and community".

Tai Tokerau has also partnered with Te Aupori Social Services to increase school students' access to a social worker and have collaborated with community and government agencies to address the impacts of youth suicide.
