The New Zealand Police have released their annual statistics for the fiscal year 2010-11 ending 30th June 2011.

Key family and sexual violence related statistics:

  • Crime decreased 5.8% nationally
  • Crime dropped substantially in Canterbury, Southern and Tasman districts
  • Sexual offences, which make up less than 1% of recorded crime and are known to be significantly under-reported, increased 12.4 per cent
  • Recorded family violence related offences dropped 3.1 per cent
  • 34 murders were recorded in the period compared with 65 the previous year

Statistics New Zealand now provide the ability to query the New Zealand Police Statistics - allowing you to gather detailed crime information about your local area for the last 10 years. This service complements the official pre-formatted reports provided via the New Zealand Police’s website at this link.

For the first time, the fiscal year offences are grouped according to the Australian Standard Offence Classification (ASOC) for grouping offence codes. The move does not change the total number of offences recorded, just how they are grouped.

The move is a first step towards making statistics in the two countries more comparable.
