At the recent Australasian Council of Women in Policing Awards held in Darwin, Inspector Rob Veale, Violence Reduction Manager for the New Zealand Police, received an award for Excellence in Policing for Women.

The award read "Developing and implementing programs that reduce domestic violence, enhancing the safety and welfare of women and improving the police response to violence against women, this recipient has worked hard and contributed a great deal of thought, time and effort to developing appropriate training packages to help police in his own and other pacific nations to combat violence against women".

Inspector Veale was the only New Zealander and only male to win an award.

Inspector Veale has had many years involvement in family violence policing and prevention. He was a key figure in establishing the current New Zealand Police Family Violence policy, the Domestic Violence Act 1995 and the development of Te Rito: the New Zealand Family Violence Prevention Strategy.
