Dr Jacqui True of the University of Auckland recently completed a report on violence against women and the political economy, that was released by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women.

This report uses a political economic analysis to better understand violence against women in light of their relationship and access to resources. It explores the global change in economic terms and how women are affected by economic changes.

Five sites are used to explore women’s increased vulnerability to violence: competitive globalisation, free trade zones, transition to market economies, migrant women workers and women in post crisis reconstruction and state building.

True argues for the broadening of the scope in efforts to reduce violence against women with increased consideration of women’s economic vulnerability to poverty, labour exploitation and exclusion from political decision making.
