The Minister responsible for family violence, Tariana Turia, yesterday launched new strategies which seek to better understand and eradicate family violence within Māori and Pacific communities. The strategies have been developed by the Māori Reference Group and the Pacific Advisory Group, linked to the Taskforce for Action on Violence Within Families, after meeting with families and communities around New Zealand. The five year strategies are based on Māori and Pacific cultural traditions, and aim to:

  • Bring about change in attitudes and behaviours of Māori and Pacific perpetrators of family violence
  • Facilitate leadership
  • Ensure support of Māori and Pacific people
  • Promote effective support services.
