The first members of the Family Violence Review Committee have now been appointed to contribute to the prevention of family violence and family violence deaths.
Associate Health Minister Steve Chadwick announced the appointment of Wendy Davis (Wellington) as the chair of the Committee, Dr Patrick Kelly (Auckland), Dr Alison Towns (Auckland), Ngaroma Grant (Rotorua), Rob Veale (Wellington), Vaoga Mary Watts (Auckland), Brenda Hynes (Wellington) and George Ririnui (Hamilton) as the inaugural Family Violence Review Committee members.
All members hold extensive experience and understanding of family violence issues having mixed expertise in mortality review systems, social science research, family violence law, child abuse and protection issues, and service provision in the social sector.
The new appointee’s are tasked with identifying trends, reviewing circumstances surrounding deaths, conducting specific reviews of clusters/subgroups of family violence deaths and participating in local family violence death reviews. They will look at why family violence deaths occur and identify changes to systems, policies and services that may prevent family violence and related deaths.
The Family Violence Review Committee’s first meeting is scheduled to take place in October, 2008.
