The draft of New Zealand's eighth periodic report on the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was released by Minister for Women Louise Upston for public consultation on 20 November 2015. Submissions close on 31 January 2016.

The draft report covers the reporting period from March 2012 to March 2016 outlining Government progress in improving outcomes for women, implementing the articles of CEDAW and addressing the Concluding Observations of the Committee made in 2012.

Read the previous New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse story for the Committee's concluding comments relating to violence against women.

Louise Upston said "New Zealand women do well on a number of economic indicators, with high participation and completion rates in tertiary education, and high workforce participation and employment rates. Until women have equal rights, equal choice, equal opportunities, equal expectations and are valued equally there is more work to be done."

A final version of the report is due to be submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in June 2016. Visit the Ministry for Women website for more information.
