This article looks at a recent spate of murders in Christchurch. "Anecdotally, I think in the majority of homicides we have the victims and offenders know each other," Canterbury police district's field crime manager, Detective Inspector Peter Read, says.

"You could say they are domestic, but last Saturday's (involved) a stranger, Agnew was stranger, and Davis; they had only recently met. All recently have been strangers or known briefly." While Canterbury homicides may be headline-grabbers, the district is not "the murder capital of New Zealand" and the levels of violence involved in killings has not escalated, Read says. "We are the same as other cities of a comparative size. In terms of violent crime, we are about middle of the pack."
