The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is considering whether changes or additions need to be made to update and strengthen the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989.

MSD is asking for public feedback from people and organisations who work with the Act and the children, young people and families who are affected by it. The government is interested in how the Act could support best practice; whether any current provisions are not working well or need to be fixed; and what is missing from the Act, or needs to be changed so that the objectives and principles of the Act can be achieved.

A discussion document has been produced which identifies some of the major themes and ideas that have come to the attention of MSD so far. The four main themes of the document are: technical amendment and drafting; care and protection; disabled children; and child offenders and youth justice.

Feedback is sought by 1 June 2007, and submissions will be incorporated into a report to Ministers later this year.
