With record numbers of Māori in prison in the last year, another prison planned and talks of kaupapa Māori prisons, now is the time for a collective conversation on what a kaupapa Māori vision for transformative change can look like.

You might have been working in this area for decades, seen the inside of a prison cell yourself or through your whānau's eyes, or be fresh to this kaupapa.

On the first day you can expect to be challenged and inspired by keynote speakers - lawyer and Māori rights activist Moana Jackson, former co-leader of the Māori Party Tā Pita Sharples, the face of criminal justice reform Dr Kim Workman, and criminal lawyer and activist Annette Sykes. They’ll also be joined by pop-up speakers who will each have 5 minutes to share their story, provoke or entertain you.

The second day is an open space where you will set the agenda. You can bring your ideas and experiences to share, or join in sessions with others or take part in our rangatahi stream. Collectively participants will work towards a vision for change that can be presented to politicians at JustSpeak election forums on 20 July (Auckland) and 27 July (Wellington).

Registration process

This hui is for Māori as well as those who work in a kaupapa Māori framework or would like to. Spaces are limited so there is a short application process so that the organisers can ensure prioritised attendance, and that there are a wide range of experiences represented. Priority will also go to those who can attend both days of the hui.

Please register your interest by Wednesday 14 June 2017. You will be notified if you have a place by 19 June 2017.
