Te Whānau O Waipareira trust has established a new research unit, Wai-Research.

Radio New Zealand reported that the unit aims to find out from the community how to address social problems such as domestic violence and poverty.

The Wai-Research team is headed by Edith McNeil, along with Dr Tanya Allport and Dr John Huakau.

The unit is supported by Massey University, including Dr Te Kani Kingi, Director Māori, who will sit on the centre’s research committee and offer mentoring and advice. Dr Kingi said,

"The Unit will provide an opportunity for Waipareira to prioritise and investigate issues of importance, to better understand these and examine, and to ultimately apply this knowledge in ways that benefit their community."

The unit's first two papers will be released in early 2015.
